CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Jan. 2, 2016) –  Billy Miller placed eighth at heavyweight at the 2016 Defense Soaps and Flip Wrestling Southern Scuffle on Saturday to lead Edinboro's contingent of wrestlers. The University of Tennessee-Chattanooga hosted the event at McKenzie Arena.

The young Fighting Scots entered the second day of competition with wrestlers still competing, but a tough morning session eliminated all but Miller. Sean Russell (125 lbs.), Patricio Lugo (149 lbs.), Casey Fuller (165 lbs.), and Vince Pickett (197 lbs.) fell one win shy of placing in a very strong field.

Edinboro finished 15th in the 31-team field.  Penn State captured first place with 183 points, followed by Oklahoma State (138 points) and Lehigh (104.5). Cornell (98.5) came in fourth, with North Carolina (97.5) fifth. Edinboro finished with 37.5 points.

Miller, the eighth seed, lost a 3-1 decision to ninth-seed Nathan Butler of Stanford in the third round on Friday night. The redshirt freshman came back to win three matches on Saturday morning, a 12-3 major decision over Duke's Brendan Walsh, a 4-2 decision in the second sudden victory session over Marcus Malecek of Air Force, and a 9-8 decision over Cornell's Jeramy Sweany, Cornell, the tenth seed.

In the consolation round, he dropped a 4-3 decision to 14th-ranked Jared Johnson of Chattanooga, the sixth seed. In the rematch with Butler with seventh place on the line, he fell by a 7-2 decision. Miller now has an 18-5 record.

Lugo, a freshman, and Pickett, a senior, were the lone Fighting Scots to reach Saturday's quarterfinals at 149 and 197 lbs., respectively. The duo would lose both of their matches on Saturday, however.

Lugo, seeded eighth, tasted defeat for the first time after winning his first twenty matches, suffering a 3-1 loss to Mitch Finesilver of Duke. In the consolation quarterfinals, he dropped a 7-4 decision to 12th-ranked Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State, the seventh seed. Lugo is now 20-2.

Pickett, the ninth seed, ran into top-ranked Morgan McIntosh of Penn State in his quarterfinal match and lost by fall at 4:25. In the consolation round, he dropped a 5-0 decision to Northern Colorado's Trent Noon.
