Three Scots in Semifinals, Edinboro Eighth After First Day of Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Edinboro wrestling team is in eighth place after the first day of competition at the 35th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.  Five Fighting Scots are still alive, with three reaching Saturday's semifinals and two more in the wrestlebacks. The Las Vegas Invitational is being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Ohio State is in first place in the 35-team field with 73 points, with Virginia Tech second (71 points) and Minnesota third (61.5). Edinboro has45.5 points.

Sean Russell, Patricio Lugo, and Austin Matthews have reached the semifinals in their respective weight classes thanks to three wins on Friday. Dakota Geer and Billy Miller lost in the quarterfinals and will wrestle again on Saturday.

Russell won three matches on Friday to reach the semifinals, including a 7-3 decision over Noah Gonser of Eastern Michigan in the quarterfinals. Seeded fourth, Russell will face top-seeded Joey Dance of Virginia Tech in a rematch of this year's season opening dual. Dance prevailed 3-0 in that meeting. Russell is now 8-2.

Lugo also faces a rematch from the Virginia Tech dual after an impressive 12-3 major decision over fifth-seeded Andrew Crone of Wisconsin in the quarterfinals. The sophomore had two takedowns and almost two minutes of riding time in the first period. He added a takedown in the second and two more in the third while improving to 9-2. He now faces top-seeded Solomon Chishko, who was a 7-5 winner in sudden victory in the first meeting.

Matthews, the fifth seed at 165 lbs., reached the semifinals with a 7-3 decision over Stanford's Keaton Subjeck, the fourth seed. The redshirt junior now draws top-seeded Isaac Jordan of Wisconsin in the semifinals. Matthews improved to 8-2.

Geer and Miller both won two matches before losing. A freshman, Geer lost to Jordan Ellingwood of Central Michigan, the fourth seed at 184 lbs., 6-4. Miller, the sixth seed at heavyweight, dropped a 5-2 decision to third-seeded Tanner Hall of Arizona State.

 

Korbin Myers (133 lbs.) and Chase Delande (157 lbs.) went was 2-2 on Friday, while Ozzy Lugo (141 lbs.), Ty Schoffstall (174 lbs.), and Dylan Reynolds (197 lbs.) were 1-2.
