CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Edinboro wrestling team turned in a strong showing at the 2017 Southern Scuffle, with six wrestlers placing as the Fighting Scots took home sixth place out of 23 teams at McKenzie Arena.

Top-ranked Oklahoma State finished in first place with 198 points. The Fighting Scots will host the Cowboys on February 3 in a dual. Missouri was second with 126 points and Lehigh (124.5 points) third. Minnesota (1180 came in fourth and Northern Iowa (87.5) rounded out the top five. Edinboro had 73 points.

Six of the 12 wrestlers who competed for Edinboro brought home medals, the most since the 2009 Southern Scuffle, when the Fighting Scots had seven wrestlers place.  Sean Russell (125 lbs.), Patricio Lugo (149 lbs.), and Dakota Geer (184 lbs.) finished fourth, while Korbin Myers (133 lbs.) and Billy Miller (285 lbs.) were seventh, and Chase Delande was eight at 157 lbs.

Lugo, a sophomore, was Edinboro's lone wrestler to reach Monday morning's semifinals. The third seed, he went up against second seed Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State, dropping a 6-1 decision. The sophomore came back with a 6-4 decision over fourth seed Laike Gardner of Lehigh in the consolation semifinals. In the third place match, Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa, the fifth seed, registered a takedown in the final ten seconds to claim a 3-1 decision. Lugo is now 18-5 on the season and picked up his 50th career win with the win over Gardner.

Russell, the fourth seed at 125 lbs., faced a familiar foe in Darian Cruz, the second seed from Lehigh. As usual, they had another close battle, with riding time the difference for Cruz in a 2-1 decision. The redshirt sophomore won three matches earlier in day, including decisions over eighth seed Nathan Kraisser of Campbell (6-5) and sixth seed Nick Piccininni of Oklahoma State (5-2). Russell is now 19-5.

Just a freshman, Geer came in as the eighth seed and upset the fourth, Chip Ness of North Carolina, 7-4, before picking up a medical forfeit win over Drew Foster of Northern Iowa, the third seed. He would drop a 5-2 decision to sixth seed Bryce Carr of Chattanooga to finish fourth. He is 18-5 on the season.

Miller was the only Fighting Scot to place a year ago, coming in eighth at heavyweight. The redshirt sophomore moved up a spot to seventh this year and is now 18-8 for the year. He remained alive in the morning with a 4-2 decision in a second sudden victory session over Doug Vollaro of Lehigh, the second time he has done that this year. He captured seventh place with a 5-3 decision over the fourth seed, Appalachian State's Denzel Dejournette.

Edinboro's other two placewinners came in unseeded. Korbin Myers, a redshirt freshman, took seventh place at 133 lbs., avenging an earlier loss to Kolby Smith of Appalachian State, the seventh seed, by a 7-4 decision. He improved to 19-7.

Redshirt senior Chase Delande proved he is better than his 12-11 season record, taking home eighth place at 157 lbs. He would lose to eighth seed Mitch Finesilver of Duke, 7-3, after previously picking up his 50th career win with a 5-0 decision over Campbell's Austin Kraisser.

Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, January 7 with an EWL match at Bloomsburg.
